Ryan Connector (Chapters 1-6)( May 4th 2010)
Connector- Connect the book, to real world happenings.
well the building a school idea has happened before, and people have built schools for places that are not fortunate enough to have a nice school, and an example would be Oprah. She built an all woman's in Africa. This (Greg's school building) was a real event as well. this book's story and adventure is true about his childhood and growing up with an autistic sister. Also when he is climbing that K2 mountain for his sister becuase of her death, that is also real, and people do that today, but most of the time it inst on such an extreme level ( walks and charities are made or done.).

Summary for Chapters 1-6
When we meet Greg Mortenson, he talks about his sister Christa. She had epilepsy; therefore Greg had to help his sister with her daily struggle. The day she turned 23, was the last day she lived. Greg felt like he lost a part of him, and he needed to find it again. He decided to make a journey up the most dangerous mountain on earth, to feel that struggle. He was going to leave her necklace at the top, but soon one of the men whom he was climbing with had to go back to the bottom because his life was put at danger, and so he wanted to go back to the bottom. He couldn’t go alone so Greg and everyone went back down with him. He didn’t want to climb all the way back up when his friend got to safety, so after deciding to go back down, he gets lost, and end up in a local village in Pakistan. Korphe, is where he ended up, and after being there for a while, he decided to build a school there in memory of his sister life. When he got back to the US, he did everything to raise the money, and even met a girl who he started to date. But he left all of it to go back to Pakistan, and make his dream a reality.

Chapter 7-8(May 5th 2010)
Researcher-
Greg Mortenson is a man who is now very successful. He has built many schools in the remote mountain ranges in Afghanistan and Pakistan. He builds them mainly for girls (memory of his sister), but his willingness to do all these nice things has touched a lot of people. he is also the founder of
Pennies For Peace a charity that you can donate to.

Summary for Chapters 7-8
Greg Mortenson goes back to the mountain where his journey was halted. When he arrives there, he gets on a bus with his money, and clothes and proceeds on to the village where the bus is taking him. The bus rides takes him longer than expected. He runs into the lifestyle of these people first hand, when a gunman is trying to be stopped. When he reached the village he shared the ideas about building the school in Korphe, but the people there said he had to build a school in their village as well. where Greg is, he cant get to Korphe because there is a bridge that needs to be built and that is where is chapter 8 ends. so relating this to the essential question,
Does history create great individuals or do great individuals create history, so far it seems as if great individuals create history, becuase HE is making the history by preparing to build this school for these people, and that is awesome.

Chapters 9-10 (May 6th 2010)

Researcher- external image moz-screenshot.pngexternal image moz-screenshot-1.pngThe Bridge to get to the village in Korphe enable transport of building materials across the river for the new school. external image moz-screenshot-2.pngThe bridge cost 10,000 dollars, and it now is not in use. there is a new bridge right beside it, but the bridge still stands. the suspension bridge was a major contributor to the making of the school, because they couldn't get the supplies over there if they didn't have the bridge. Summary- Well, Greg dosen't have enough money to build the bridge, so he goes back to America. But when he gets back to America he looses his job. He doesn't know what to do so he calls up his friend (a doctor) and tell him what is going on, and how he might give up, but his friend insists that he keep going and with a large donation, he is ready to go back to the village to build the bridge. He goes back to the village and he starts the process, and eventually finishes the bridge to Korphe, and that's where it stops. This shows that man makes history because everything he does, impacts the places he is doing for. The doctor is one man, and he is making the history happen by giving Greg money to fulfill his dream. This shows that the man is making the history again, because his friends and funders are making it possible for great history to happen.

While there though, Greg meets his lover Tara. the couple married one another after knowing each other for less than week. Then later, he goes back to Korphe . When Mortenson got back his building of the school set sail. He really pushed the people to build the school as soon as they could possible build it. The school was up in no time. At the beginning of Chapter 13, Greg is with his friend, and the two get kidnapped. He rides in the back of a car, and is blind folded and driven away from where he is. It was about 45 minutes away. It seems as if someone is out to get him.He is now also being sued for religious beliefs during 14. Relating this to the essential question, this shows that the man, is still making the history, because HE is impacting this place, this history is being made by him. He is also now the head of the CAI to do this for other places. man is making the history.

Chapters 15 and 16 (Due Wed. may 13th 2010)

Summary- In chapter 15 Mortenson is now a victim of another religious law suit fatwa. This means he is being sued for educating women, which is not correct in the Pakistani lifestyle. He gathers some of his friends, and allies to try and get it reversed, or voided. After waiting, and fighting it with all he had, the invitation came in a Velvet Red box. Expecting the worst, he opens it and finds that the law suit, was a void. He was ecstatic. now that this was out of the way, he was getting calls to do schools in villages all over. Realizing the importance of girls education, Mortenson ties CAI funding for schools to continue to put girls into the school's. The CAI provides water systems for five villages, hires teachers for Afghan students living in refugee camps in northern Pakistan, brings an American eye surgeon to provide cataract surgery, and sends Baltistan’s only eye doctor to Nepal for special training. Mortenson, meanwhile, has become a heroic figure to many Pakistanis.
This shows how the man, is still creating history because, if the vote hadn't have gotten vitoed by the men voting, it wouldn't have let them build more schools. History was made by making the law, but the man is breaking it.

Chapters 17-18 Summary (due may 14 2010)

Fatima Batool is a main character in chapter 17. She is living in India, during the time of the Kargil Conflict between India and Pakistan. She, and her family get pushed away from thier home, and they are forced to move into a camp with people that are going through the same thing. The outskirts of Skardu is where the camp is located, and thats where Mortenson goes next. He Builds a school for the girls in the camp. He talks to men from the Taliban about the conflict, and they explain to him, how Britian left, splinting the territory into Pakistan, and India because of the religious views, and conflicts. As the chapter ends, Fatima has reached the fifth grade, and where she lived, grew the same cherry trees that she loved so much. Mortenson in chapter 18, is now trying to gain more money, and raise the awareness of what is really going on, and how he is trying to fix it. Mortenson's plan's, and his hope for people to come, is a disaster. No body really comes, and he gets a check for 20,000 dollars, a start but no where near enough. People always tell him that they will give him money but no one seemed to follow through. He puts his ideas in the media, and things start to pick up and become more successful. But his lack of organization, and stress level make him go see a theripist now, learn more about Managing. The board of the CAI suggested also that he get an assistant. He goes home to Montana for a few days, and then headed to Bangladesh, to learn about educating women there too, and building up the poor areas. He and his wife also conceive and have another baby. It's a boy Khyber Bishop. Relating this to the essential question, i think that 17 was more of history creating great individuals, because the conflict between the people, and the fighting has changed the life of many people, and the people that he meets with, and gets to know those people are great in his eyes, and so that's how it relates to the question. Chapter 18, he is still changing the life of many, and his life is making the history still.

Chapters 19-20
Maya 18 2010

Now a focused, organized, and a new mindset Mortenson is ready to be a better Worker, and boss. Mortenson's ideas and ways of building school's has spread to the people in Pakistan personally. He meets people who are building schools to better their children, because they realize that education is important. In chapter 19 he learns about the Wahhabi madrassa. Its a type of school for the children, meaning bee hive. Later on Mortenson looks into the border. Mortenson was shocked at how much building the Pakistan and the Afghan border had been going through. Mortenson also found that the curriculum in the schools was all Islamic based. They taught based on this religion in hopes to get some 80,000 + children and growing adults to support and fight with the Taliban. This is showing that the man is still creating the history. His ways of building schools has reached out to the people, and his willingness to want to learn about what is going on in their life, continuously shows his desire, and show his passion to change history.

Passage Master
" I was amazed by all their new construction right here inteh heart of Shiite Baltistan. For the first time I understand the scale of what they were trying to do and it scared me."
I chose this quote because it shows him talking about the severities of the work on the Border of Pakistan and Afghanistan, which I mentioned in my essay. This was a popular quote amoungst our group (we liked it).

Chapters 21-23 (Due may 21, 2010)
These last few chapters were pretty suttle. You learn about him going on and being successful and building more and more schools. He recives awards and achievement things. This really shows how man can change history. This theme glows throughout the book. One man, One man changed the life of so many, because of one person in his life. He has devoted his life to this, and has effected millions. He is a prime example of how man changes history.
